Happy New Year! And welcome to the first edition of our monthly PCAO Community Newsletter from Pima County Attorney Laura Conover and The People’s Office!
As we prepare to take on the challenges ahead in 2022, take a look at our Year One Review, a short but substantive report on our accomplishments and the obstacles we faced in 2021. This year PCAO “underwent a transformation that will lead to a safer and more just Southern Arizona going forward,” County Attorney Conover stated in her open letter that leads the review.
In 2021, PCAO:
- Stopped asking for the death penalty in Pima County;
- Re-trained prosecutors to reverse practices that have jailed too many people just because they’re poor;
- Treated children like children, keeping them in the juvenile system instead of transferring them to adult courts;
- Helped mitigate the collateral consequences of a conviction history by restoring rights and expunging marijuana convictions;
- And hosted events with people in underserved communities who haven’t had access to this Office in the past.
