Back To School for our Summer Law Clerks

#WeekInJustice: Week 183

The theme this week seemed to be about closing a chapter and starting the next. No, not the BIG NEXT CHAPTER. More on that later.

But rather I was focused on the 14 (14!) summer law clerks we had with us and who were readying themselves to return to their next year in law school.

Thanks to the mad-dash, mad-cap hiring frenzy that happens in February, our team chose wisely. (See ballroom hiring hilarity pictured here with Criminal Chief Josh Moser and Major Crimes Chief Mark Hotchkiss delighting over the embarrassment of riches to choose from on that fateful day.) The 12 law students who joined us in the Criminal Division and two in Civil were absolutely brilliant, excited, and inspired future attorneys who are also genuinely kind souls.

We huddled yesterday, so I could hear what we could have done better (more assignments? Seriously guys?) And what went well.

They seemed credibly joyful.  They adored all the attorneys they met, the mentoring they received, the field trips they took – even the in-progress autopsy – and the growth they achieved.

To Bill Brammer, Sam Walker, and James Rappaport, a huge congratulations on the program you continue to build.

As the law students go back to school, eleven San Miguel High School freshman will join us one day a week to begin their own professional development. And more on that extraordinary program soon as well.

At the People’s Office, we serve ALL of Pima County, including youth.

By centering and empowering those in their 20s, and now those in their teens, we continue to advance our goal of serving all and being informed by all.

To be continued,

Laura
